Scottish Design Exchange

Scottish Design Exchange, an artist-friendly seller of Scottish artists and creators’ work, secured a loan of £12,000 from SIS to support with working capital as they replicated their model in a new location.

Scottish Design Exchange

Scottish Design Exchange (SDX) sell exquisitely designed products by artists living in Scotland; with every penny spent by their customers going directly to the creators. SDX exists to offer local Scottish artists, designers and creators an opportunity to exhibit, sell and promote their work in a busy and competitive retail environment.

Having started trading in 2015, SDX now work with artists of all levels, some who work in living rooms or kitchens, some in small or shared studios, but all of whom are keen to earn a living by sharing their creativity. In 2016, the organisation converted to a Community Interest Company (CIC) and follow a social enterprise business model by running a retail space in a high footfall area to enable small and new businesses (predominately sole traders) to sell their work and keep 100% of the profits, only paying a fair fee for shelf space.

SDX is now not only benefiting local creatives, but also the general public who shop in their store. While SDX offers access to beautiful local artwork, its model also encourages customers to shop locally and consider the benefits of locally produced items, including value, carbon footprint and the importance of local enterprise.

In 2018, following two successful years of their Edinburgh store, SDX wished to replicate their business model within Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow. To do so, the team approached SIS for £12,000 loan to support with working capital while duplicating their model in a new and additional location.

Now, SDX are selling from their Edinburgh and Glasgow stores, as well as online, and stock over 300 local artists, designers and creators. The team at SIS has always been delighted with their purchases from SDX and would highly recommend a visit to their Edinburgh or Glasgow store.

“Working with the SIS Team has been a very positive experience. The staff are very approachable, and they have been extremely helpful when I have needed advice. The loan we received from SIS has been invaluable in helping us to grow our business and open in a new location in the centre of Glasgow. I have felt like the SIS Team have been on board with my business since the day we started working with them on the loan and they have felt like part of our growth, being available to answer questions and even coming along to our events to show their support. All in all, working with SIS has been a great relationship and one that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for financial support for their business.”
