Background
Calman Trust Ltd (‘Calman') is a voluntary organisation based in the Highlands, offering a range of training opportunities within a supportive environment for young people who are disengaged from the education process or mainstream training. This incorporates formal and informal learning opportunities, plus support to access and sustain employment, further education or training. In addition to skills building, practical support is offered for young people to deal with the other pressures associated with the transition to independent adulthood at a young age. Social enterprise provides the context in which individuals can ‘learn by doing', where they see how their contribution matters.
How SIS helped
The Scottish Investment Fund facilities will enable the development of a Café and Enterprise Hub, in Inverness city centre which will offer accredited training opportunities and employment for up to 167 individuals per year by year 5 of the business plan. The grant and loan facilities offered, align well with Calman's aspiration to operate as an effective business.
